DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Three bears were euthanized in the previous week at Colorado.

A bear that came within a few feet of 2 kids playing outside around Vallecito Lake was tracked and euthanized Tuesday.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife services could chase the bear with tracking dogs and euthanize it.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say the other bear was killed Friday when a Durango landowner shot a bear which had killed some chickens.

The 19-year-old awakened at approximately 4 a.m. into a “crunching sound” along with his mind within the mouth of the bear, which had been hoping to pull him from his sleeping bag because he slept outside at Glacier View Ranch 48 miles (77 km) northwest of Denver, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said.

The staffer was treated temporarily in a hospital and released.

The three incidents continue to highlight an active season for human-bear conflicts, as a bad natural-food cycle has repeatedly pushed the critters to find alternate food sources, mainly from people, such as trash or bird feeders.

“This is my fifth summer down here, and this is definitely the biggest call volume and variety of events we’ve had,” said Matt Thorpe, wildlife manager to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Bryan Peterson of Bear Smart Durango said this season is the funniest season since the natural-food collapse year of 2012. He said while rain can benefit, the late frost in June is likely to have a toll on late-night acorns, an essential staple to a bear’s diet.

“It could get worse before it gets even better,” he said.
